How to Customize Google Assistant Settings

What is Google Assistant?


Google Assistant is an upgrade to the existing Google Now and Google Now on Tap. Google Assistant is like your own personal assistant or your personal Google. You can ask it questions or ask it to do things for.

How To Set up Google Assistant


To use Google Assistant you must be logged in to your Google Account. If you've enabled the voice activation, you can launch Google Assistant by saying "OK Google". You can also launch it by long pressing on the Home button of your device.
How to launch Google Assistant

If you are about to use Google Assistant for the first time, long press on your home button. You should see the Screen  "Meet your personal Google Assistant" Tap on Continue then tap Yes, I'm in on the next screen to allow the necessary permissions.

You will be prompted to configure voice activation, all you've got to do is repeat the phrase "OK Google" three times. Easy!

To get the most out of Google Assistant, make sure Google Assistant is using your primary account, If you have more than one Google account on your phone.

How To Switch Google Account For Google Assistant


  • Long Press on the home button to launch Google Assistant.
  • Tap the 3 dot menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window.
  • Tap Account.  
  • Choose the Account you want to use.

How to Customize your Google Assistant

You can further customize Google Assistant by diving into the Google Assistant app settings.
How To get to the Google Assistant App Settings,
  • long press on the home screen
  • Tap the menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window
  • Tap on settings

How To Edit Your Personal Info

You can edit Your personal Information like: Home and Work Location, Nickname, preferences, and Email Updates.

How to Edit your Home and work Location

  • Long Press on the home button to launch Google Assistant.
  • Tap the 3 dot menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window.
  • Tap settings
  • Tap on your Google account or scroll down and tap on personal info
  • Tap on Home and Work Location
  • Tap on Add Home address
  • Type your home address and press the back arrow.
  • Tap on Add work address
  • Type your work address, and press the back arrow.

How to Edit your Google Assistant Nickname

  • Long Press on the home button to launch Google Assistant.
  • Tap the 3 dot menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window.
  • Tap settings
  • Tap on your Google account or scroll down and tap on personal info
  • Tap on Nickname
  • Tap on the edit icon in front of Nickname
  • Type in your preferred Nickname
  • Tap ok

You can make Google Assistant speak out your Nickname by tapping on the play icon under Use default. If you are not satisfied with how Google Assistant is pronouncing your Nickname, you can help to spell it out phonetically by tapping the Spell it out radio button under Pronunciation.

How To Customize your preferences

You can customize the temperature unit of your weather forecast. To do this:
  • Long Press on the home button to launch Google Assistant.
  • Tap the 3 dot menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window.
  • Tap settings
  • Tap on your Google account or scroll down and tap on personal info
  • Tap on preferences
  • Select the the temperature unit you prefer, (Celsius or Fahrenheit).

How to Customize Email Updates

  • Long Press on the home button to launch Google Assistant.
  • Tap the 3 dot menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window.
  • Tap settings
  • Tap on your Google account or scroll down and tap on personal info
  • Tap on Email Updates
  • Enable email updates so you can stay connected with latest news and features related to your assistant.

How To Customize My Day

Google Assistant can give you a daily briefing of things you need to know. When you say "Tell me about my day" your assistant will tell you about the weather, work commute, reminders, next meeting and more.
To customize your My Day

  • Long Press on the home button to launch Google Assistant.
  • Tap the 3 dot menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window.
  • Tap settings
  • Tap My Day
  • Tap the check boxes of what you want to be included (weather, work commute, Next meeting and Reminders) in your My Day briefing.

You also have the option of choosing whether to end your briefing with narrated news reports.

How to Customize or Edit the News Sources (Narrated News reports)

  • Launch Google Assistant.
  • Tap the menu icon
  • Tap settings
  • Scroll down and tap News
  • Tap customize
  • Tap the checkboxes of the News source you will like to add.
  • Tap the back arrow .
Whenever you want to listen to the news just say "Listen to the News"
You will hear news from the news source you chose. You can drag the news source to change their order.

How To Customize "OK Google" Voice Detection

Long Press on the home button to launch Google Assistant.

  • Tap the 3 dot menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window.
  • Tap settings
  • Scroll down and Tap on "OK Google" detection.
  • Tap on 'Say "OK Google" any time' to enable or disable the function.
If enabled, your device recognizes your voice when you say "OK Google" even if your screen is off or when you are using another app.

Enable Trusted Voice. You will be able to unlock your device with your voice when you say "OK Google"

How to Block or Unblock Offensive Words

Google Assistant censors all Offensive words by default. If you are okay with offensive words you can turn it on easily.
  • Long Press on the home button to launch Google Assistant.
  • Tap the 3 dot menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window.
  • Tap settings
  • Scroll down
  • Tap voice
  • Tap the Toggle switch next to block offensive words.

You Can Use Google Assistant Offline

  • Long Press on the home button to launch Google Assistant.
  • Tap the 3 dot menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window.
  • Tap settings
  • Scroll down
  • Tap Voice
  • Tap Offline speech recognition
  • Install or update the languages

How to view all your Activities

Google keep a record of all activities and history of Google Assistant. It keeps a record of your questions and search activities. It's also keeps track of the location you made your request from. Google says only you can see this data. Google also protects your privacy and security.
To see and manage your Google Assistant activity history:

  • Long Press on the home button to launch Google Assistant.
  • Tap the 3 dot menu icon in the top right corner of the Google Assistant window.
  • Tap settings
  • Scroll down
  • Tap My Activity
  • You'll be presented with a list of web browsers if you haven't selected one as the default.
  • Select Chrome.
  • You will be taken to a web page containing all your Google's records of all your logged activities on Google Assistant.
  • You can then tap details to see more information about the activity.

Commands You can Give Google Assistant

Below are some Google Assistant commands
Whenever you want to command your Google Assistant say "OK Google"  or by long pressing on the home key to access the Assistant. Then say your command.

To play Music

To ask Google Assistant to play music Say OK Google then say Play Music Google Assistant will launch your Google play music and start playing any music on your device.

To play a Specific music

Ask Google Assistant to play a specific music by saying "OK Google" then say "play music name"

To play music from an album
Say "OK Google" then say "play Album name"

To Set Alarm Clock

Say OK Google then say "set an alarm for 5 am or set an alarm for 6 am everyday or say wake me up by 6 am

To ask About the weather Say

Say OK Google then say What's the weather like or say is it going to rain today or say do I need an umbrella?

Ask Google Assistant A Question

To ask a question Say OK Google then ask your question. For example Say Who is the president of Nigeria, Google Assistant will answer you. Continue your questions by saying OK Google say what's his wife's name and Google Assistant will be aware that you wish to know the name of the Nigerian president and will answer your questions.

Place A call

To ask Google Assistant to place a call say OK Google then say call Daddy
Call mum home

Send A message

To send an SMS Say OK Google then say send an SMS to daddy then read out your SMS and then say send.
